ANCIENT ROMAN MILITARY GENERAL AUREOLUS COIN PENDANT WITH STUNNING RICH
GREEN BRONZE PATINA
IN
14KY GOLD
267 A.D.
With its
rich blue-green ancient bronze patina, this is probably one of the most
richly patinated ancient bronze coins I have encountered in my 23 year
experience. This is a rare bronze GENUINE ancient Roman
antoninianus coin featuring the Roman emperor POSTUMUS. It was
minted in 267 A.D. and is dedicated to Postumus' military general
Aureolus. The level of the detail and preservation of the profile
of Postumus is of THE FINEST COLLECTOR QUALITY, rare for this type of
issue. The color of the bronze patina contrasts handsomely with
the 14K yellow gold polished pendant setting.
Equally fitting for
either a man or a woman to wear, no doubt, this piece will really make
for a unique and interesting fine jewelry pendant in comparison to the
vast amount of cliché, mass-produced jewelry found in nearly every store
today. Postumus was a
Gallic Roman emperor of ancient Gaul, Hispania, Germany, and Britain.
The center of his empire was established in Cologne. Postumus set
up his own senate, consuls and praetorian guard for protection.
After successfully defending Gaul against the German barbarians, he
represented himself as the restorer of the Gallic peoples.
Having been usurped in power of the region by Postumus, Gallienus
launched a campaign to defeat Postumus in 263 A.D.. Despite early
success in wresting back power from Postumus, Gallienus suffered a
serious wound by an arrow and had to leave the battlefield leading to a
failed attempt at defeating Postumus. Weighed down with even
further series of crises after this, Gallienus was never able to defeat
Postumus and gave up in the attempt. One factor in complicating
this was that Aureolus, a general of Gallienus who was in command of
Milan, defected to the side of Postumus, the very enemy that Gallienus
hired him to watch.
Overall diameter is
21 mm, between the size of a U.S. penny and nickel.
